Online Roulette: the origins

Roulette is one of the most popular casino games for bettors. “Roulette”, in French, means “small wheel”, which would indicate that it has its origin in France. However, there are other nationalities and cultures that also dispute the creation of this game. Currently, there are no casinos that do not have roulette among their main games and part of their great appeal has to do with the simplicity of its rules, making it so popular that software companies are always pushing new casino games in the UK every season.  If you want to know more about this classic game, then we will tell you a little about its origin and its different versions.

France – Where it all started

The original French version of the roulette is the most recognized, and it goes back to the year 1655. It was there that the scientist Blaise Pascal used a wheel divided into compartments where he made a ball spin, all while studying the “theory of probability”. Once the ball landed in one of the boxes, the winning number was obtained. This French version is the one that has more followers since it is presented as the most similar to roulette that is currently known. Today, it is not only possible to play in land-based casinos, but there are also online casinos, in which you can bet money and even play roulette for free.

The Roman roulette

It is said that the time of the Roman Empire, soldiers scattered and entertained with gambling and gambling after their confrontations and battles. The heads and superiors of the war camps gave their approval to these practices so that the soldiers have a moment of détente. Between these games, the warriors played with a kind of wheel marked with numbers or any other symbol, on which they made their bets.

Ancient china

Less known than the western versions, it is believed that the old empires had a similar game. In ancient China, a guessing game was played whose shape is similar to that of a roulette wheel. On a round wooden container divided into 37 compartments, a small marble ball was rolled. A curious fact is that each of the lockers had a drawing of an animal sacred to this culture. Some historians claim that this roulette came to Europe in the late Middle Ages with the Muslims.

Roulette as a casino game

The use of roulette as a game of chance is believed to have started in the 19th century when the French “Blanc” brothers introduced it to the Monte Carlo casino. After that, they began to play in the North American casinos of New Orleans, thus emerging the American roulette that included the double zero. Roulette is currently one of the most important forms of gambling in the world of online casino games. For its part, the growth of followers and gamblers in its online versions is becoming more and more noticeable.

The digital revolution

The Internet began with the first network of computers connected to each other, back in the eighties. A computer was, at that time, too big and expensive to be accessible to the public. But they gradually evolved until, in 1996, the first online casino made its appearance. The first online casino had just a few slots and a couple of blackjack tables, but since the year 2000, when computers were already accessible to a majority and the Internet became something much larger, online casinos began to proliferate, increasing the variety of games and improving their features more and more until they reached the spectacular versions of nowadays.

However, it seems that this has only just begun. In just a couple of decades, operators have gone from a rudimentary virtual casino with a couple of games (like online baccarat or poker) to having sites with thousands of different titles such as Multi-ball roulette or Spingo. Nowadays you can play digital roulette with a mobile device, and live casinos are proliferating, where the user can interact with a human dealer via video in real-time. Given this rapid evolution, who knows what awaits us in the future?
